Short answer: The reader's sign-in screen can't use passkeys or security keys, so Stripe's sign-in fails if that's the method your Stripe account asks for. Choose another way to sign in, like a text message or authenticator app code.
Why it happens
When you sign in with Payment for Stripe on a Stripe Reader S700 or S710, Stripe's sign-in page opens inside the app. That page can't run passkeys or hardware security keys on the reader. If your account is set up to use one, you get this error, or a white page after you enter your password.
The user agent does not support public key credentials
How to fix it
- At the two-step prompt, choose Sign in another way and pick a method that works on the reader, such as your authenticator app or a text message. Stripe controls this screen, so the options may look different.
- If you have no other method set up, sign in to your Stripe Dashboard on a phone or computer and add an authenticator app or phone number under your security settings. Then sign in on the reader.
- If you can't get past two-step, Stripe's help page covers backup codes and account recovery. Our Can't log in? article covers the other common sign-in problems.
Too many attempts sent to phone
Stripe limits how many text codes it'll send. Wait a while, then try again with an authenticator app code instead of a text.
A white or blank page after signing in
- Close the app and open it again.
- Check the reader's connection. Swipe in from the left edge, tap Settings, enter the admin passcode, and open Diagnostics. The Stripe connectivity test should say Passed. If not, fix the Wi-Fi first.
- Restart the reader and sign in again.
