Use a Stripe S700 or S710 without a phone

Short answer: yes. The Stripe Reader S700 and S710 can take payments on their own, with no phone or tablet. There are two ways to do it, and a reader runs one or the other — not both.

• Stripe's standalone mode — a simple keypad built into the reader by Stripe. Enter an amount, take the card. No app, and no Payment for Stripe fee.
• Payment for Stripe on the reader — the full app running on the S700/S710, with products, customers, invoices and more. The usual 1.2% app fee applies.

How do I set up standalone mode?

Use our free setup at paymentforstripe.com/stripe-standalone-mode. It takes a few minutes:

1. Tap Set up standalone mode, then connect your Stripe account (or create one).
2. Enter the address where you'll use the reader. We create the Terminal location and turn on standalone mode for you.
3. On the reader, open Settings and generate a pairing code. It shows as three words.
4. Enter the code and tap Register Reader.
5. Reboot the reader, then tap the splash screen to open the payment screen.

What can standalone mode do?

Card and digital wallet payments, on-reader tips, refunds (with an optional passcode) and email receipts. If a card needs a PIN (common on cards issued outside the US), the reader asks for it. It needs an internet connection — there's no offline mode — and it can't save cards, sell products or run subscriptions. The Verifone V660p supports standalone mode too.

What does it cost?

Just Stripe's processing fees. Payment for Stripe doesn't charge anything for standalone mode or the setup. Stripe's in-person rate doesn't depend on which reader you use.

Can I switch to the Payment app later?

Yes. Turn standalone mode off in your Stripe Dashboard under Terminal > Locations, then reboot the reader. To run Payment for Stripe on the reader instead, follow Installing the standalone Payment app directly onto the Stripe Reader S700/S710. Or pair the S700/S710 with your phone or tablet and use the app there.
