What does "declined for making repeated attempts too frequently or exceeding its amount limit" mean?

  • Updated

Short answer: the customer's bank has paused this card, either because it was tried too many times in a short window or because the sale is over the card's limit. Retrying right away won't help. Ask for a different card.

Why does it happen?

Stripe shows this message when the bank declines with the card_velocity_exceeded code. The card has hit a balance, credit, or per-transaction limit, or the bank has seen too many attempts in a row. Each new try counts as another attempt, so running the same card again usually gets the same answer.

What should I do?

  1. Ask for another card or a phone wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  2. Splitting a large sale across two cards can work if the amount is the issue.
  3. If the customer wants to use this card, they'll need to call their bank. Only the bank can raise the limit or clear the block.
