Short answer: your customer's card runs on a payment network that Tap to Pay doesn't accept in your country. Ask for a Visa or Mastercard, or a phone wallet.
Why does it happen?
Every card belongs to a network (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and local ones). Tap to Pay on iPhone accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover contactless cards, plus a few local networks where Stripe supports them: eftpos in Australia, Interac in Canada, and Cartes Bancaires in France. Cards that only run on another network are turned away before the payment starts. Common examples:
- UnionPay, JCB, and other international networks that Tap to Pay doesn't take in your country.
- Local debit networks that need a specific card reader. In Germany, for example, girocard works on the BBPOS WisePad 3 and Stripe Reader S700, not on Tap to Pay.
- Cards set to a local-only contactless network, like some cards in Japan.
What should I do?
- Ask for a different card, ideally Visa or Mastercard, or a phone wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- If you see this often with the same kind of card, a Stripe card reader may accept it. Stripe lists which networks each reader supports by country.
- Or send a payment link the customer can pay from their own phone.
