Fix "Bluetooth permission is required" on Android

  • Updated

Short answer: update Payment for Stripe from Google Play. On some Android 10 and 11 devices — often older tablets — the app wrongly reported "Bluetooth permission is required to connect to the card reader." There was no setting you could change to fix it, which is why tweaking your tablet's settings didn't help. Version 14.4.5 fixed it, so any current version works.

How do I fix it?

  1. Open Google Play, find Payment for Stripe and tap Update.
  2. Close the app completely and reopen it.
  3. Connect your reader again. Here's the full walkthrough for the M2: Using the Stripe M2 card reader on the Android app.

You don't need to undo any settings you changed while troubleshooting.

Does this only affect the M2?

No. It hit every Bluetooth reader on those devices, including the WisePad 3 and Chipper 2X BT. The same update fixes them all.

Now it says "Precise location is required"?

Stripe needs your precise location to connect a reader. Open your device's settings for Payment for Stripe, go to Location, and turn on Use precise location.
