Tips are on, but the tip screen doesn't show

Short answer: Turning on tips is only half of it. Who sees the tip screen depends on how you're taking the payment. Customers pick a tip in the app for most sales. A reader's own screen only shows tips on certain readers, and only if you've asked for it.

Check the tip setting first

  1. Open the menu and tap Settings.
  2. Under Taxes, Gratuity & Fees (Android: Taxes, gratuity & fees), make sure Tips & gratuity is on.

Settings: Taxes, Gratuity & Fees section with Tips & gratuity on and Present on-reader tips

  3. If it's greyed out with Set by your organization under it, your Enterprise admin controls tips for your team. Ask them to change it.

Where the tip screen appears

  • Stripe Reader M2, Tap to Pay, manual card entry, and any reader not listed below: these can't show tips on the reader. The tip screen shows in the app, before the customer pays. Turn the phone or tablet toward your customer.

  • Stripe Reader S700, Stripe Reader S710, BBPOS WisePOS E, and BBPOS WisePad 3: these can show tips on the reader's own screen. Turn on Present on-reader tips in the same settings section. On Android, the row shows only once Tips & gratuity is on and your Stripe account is in a country where on-reader tipping works.

With Present on-reader tips turned off, a reader like the S700 won't show tips on the reader. The tip screen shows in the app instead (on iPhone, the tip selector shows before the reader is asked for a card).

No tip screen on the reader after turning it on?

  1. Disconnect the reader and connect it again. The app sets up the reader's tip screen when it connects.
  2. Wait a few minutes, then try a new sale. Stripe says a WisePOS E can take up to 5 minutes to receive a new setting.
  3. Check the currency. Stripe skips the reader's tip screen when there's no tip setup for the sale's currency.
  4. Check that your Stripe account's country is on Stripe's list for on-reader tips.

Tips never show for these sales

  • Paying an invoice. The invoice already has its amount, so there's no tip step. (On iPhone, payment links skip it too.)

To change the tip amounts customers see, tap Customize tip percentages in the same settings section.

Customize Tips: 20%, 18% and 15%, with a field to add a percentage
