Short answer: Turn on Collect tax automatically and Stripe works out the tax on each sale. If you'd rather set your own rate, pick a tax rate instead. You can use one or the other, not both.
Automatic tax
Stripe calculates tax from your business address, your tax registrations, and your products' tax settings. It works on keypad sales and product sales, and the tax shows on the sale review screen and receipt.
- Open Settings, then Taxes, Gratuity & Fees (Android: Taxes, gratuity & fees).
- Turn on Collect tax automatically.
- If the app asks for your business address or what you mainly sell, fill it in and tap Save and continue. It saves to your Stripe Tax settings.
Finish Stripe Tax setup in your Stripe Dashboard. Set your business address, add a tax registration for each region where you collect tax, and set a tax behavior (exclusive or inclusive) on your products. If setup isn't finished, the app shows this message, and you can take the sale without tax:
Stripe Tax setup isn't finished
Finish it in your Stripe tax settings, or take this sale without tax.
Exclusive or inclusive? That comes from your Stripe tax settings. Exclusive adds tax on top of the price. Inclusive means the price already includes it.
Offline: automatic tax needs a connection. An offline sale goes through without tax, and the app tells you:
This sale won't include tax. Automatic tax needs a connection.
Your own tax rate
Open the menu, tap Tax Rates (Android: Tax rates), and pick a rate. To make a new one, tap + (Add Tax Rate if you have none yet; Android: Add tax rate) and enter the percentage and jurisdiction, and choose whether it's included in the price. Turning on a manual rate switches automatic tax off, and the app asks you to confirm.
Different rates per product
The app applies one tax rate to a sale, not a separate rate for each product. For mixed rates, like Canadian items taxed differently, use automatic tax and set up your products and registrations in your Stripe Dashboard.
