Short answer: Set up a donation as a Stripe product where the donor picks the amount. Then ring it up in Payment for Stripe like any other item. Tap, swipe, or key in the card as usual.
Set up a donation item
- In your Stripe Dashboard, add a product (for example, "Donation") and set its price so the customer chooses what to pay. Stripe calls this customer-chosen pricing. You can set a minimum, a maximum, and a preset amount.
- Open the app and go to Products. Your donation shows up. On Android, the price reads Customer chooses price.
- Add the item to the sale. The app asks for the amount (Enter the amount you'd like to charge on iPhone, Enter the amount you would like to pay on Android).
- Enter the donor's amount and take payment.
If you enter an amount outside your limits, the app tells you the minimum or maximum.
Other things that help
- Receipts: after a sale you can send a receipt to the donor's email.
- Donor ID: in Settings, turn on Collect donor ID to ask for a donor or customer tax ID, like the Italian Codice Fiscale.
- Tips: turn Tips & gratuity off in Settings if you don't want a tip screen on donations.
What does it cost?
Payment for Stripe has one simple fee: 1.2%, plus Stripe's own processing fees. Nonprofits can also look at the Enterprise for Non-profits plan. See "Enterprise plans compared".
Choose-your-price items and the product list
These work on both iPhone and Android. Create them in your Stripe Dashboard, then they appear in the app.
