Take a payment by reader, Tap to Pay, typed card or cash

  • Updated

Short answer: type the amount, tap Next, and the app takes it from there — the card reader or Tap to Pay if one's ready, a card form if not. Cash has its own button. Card sales create a Stripe charge. Cash sales are recorded as a paid invoice, with no charge and no fee.

Before you start

Get your reader or Tap to Pay ready from the menu (the person icon at the top left on iPhone and iPad, or the menu icon on Android):

  • Card reader: tap Connect Card Reader (iPhone and iPad) or Connect reader (Android).
  • Tap to Pay: tap Enable Tap to Pay on iPhone or Enable Tap to Pay (Android). It only shows on phones that support it.

Card reader or Tap to Pay

  1. Enter the amount, or add products to the cart.
  2. Tap Next, then Begin Transaction.
  3. Your customer taps, inserts or swipes their card (or taps their phone or card on yours for Tap to Pay).

Typing in a card

  1. Enter the amount and tap Next.
  2. No reader connected? The card form opens. Reader connected? Tap the keypad icon at the top right (Enter card manually).
  3. Enter the card number, expiry and CVC, then tap Charge.

There's no extra app fee for typed cards, but Stripe charges its online rate instead of the lower in-person rate. More here: Is there a special rate for using a card reader?

Cash

  1. Turn on Allow cash payments in Settings (once per device).
  2. Enter the amount, then tap the … button next to Next (on Android, the arrow on the right side of the button).
  3. Choose Cash payment and tap Record cash payment.

Cash needs an internet connection, and the option hides while you're offline. Everything else about cash is here: How do I record cash payments?

Where do my sales show up?

Card sales appear in Payments in the app and in your Stripe Dashboard. If you sold products, Stripe also shows a matching paid invoice — that's normal: Why does my Stripe Dashboard show two entries for the same product sale?
