When would I use "Authorize-only"?

  • Updated

Authorize Only is for placing a hold on a card rather than charging it right away. The classic example is a hotel: at check-in they authorize a hold on your card for incidentals, then capture the final amount when you check out.

A hold is released automatically if you don't capture it within the authorization window (typically 7 days). To actually collect the money, capture the payment before then.
