Short answer: Payment for Stripe doesn't have a dedicated deposit or partial-payment feature. You can still do it by charging the deposit now and the balance later.
The workaround:
- Type the deposit amount on the keypad, like $50 on a $200 order.
- Add a description so it's easy to find later, like "Deposit, Smith wedding cake." The description shows on the receipt and in Stripe.
- Attach the customer to the sale if you can, so both payments sit under their name.
- Take the payment as usual.
- When the customer comes back, charge the remaining amount the same way and describe it as the balance.
Good to know:
- Each payment is a normal sale. Each one gets its own receipt, and you can refund each one separately.
- The app doesn't track the remaining balance for you. Keep your own note of what's still owed.
- If you want to hold the full amount on the customer's card instead of charging a deposit, use Authorize only. It holds the funds without taking them, and holds expire. See Authorize only.
