Collect (or skip) a customer's name and email at checkout

Short answer: Customer details are always optional in Payment for Stripe. Leave the fields blank and the sale goes through without them. A name and email only matter if you want a receipt emailed or a customer record in Stripe.

On iPhone and iPad

When your reader or Tap to Pay on iPhone is ready, the screen shows Name, Email, Phone and Address fields above the charge button. Fill in any of them, or none. If you enter an email, Stripe emails the customer a receipt automatically.

There's no setting that hides these fields on iOS right now. Skipping them is as simple as not typing anything.

On Android

The reader screen has the same optional Name, Email and Phone fields. Android also has a switch that controls whether card-entry sales ask for details:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. In the Payments section, find Collect customer details.
  3. Turn it on to be asked on every typed-card sale, or off to never be asked.

It's off by default. When it's on, the form has a Skip button, so you can still charge without filling it in.

When an email is required

Subscriptions need a customer email to send invoices, so the app asks for one and doesn't offer Skip. Selling a plan is where that applies.

What if a card gets declined and asks for billing details?

Some cards decline unless the customer's billing information is provided. If that happens, the app suggests collecting customer details and, on Android, can turn Collect customer details on for you.
